Building Information Modeling BIM

BIM process supports the ability to coordinate, update, and share design data with team members throughout the design, construction, and management phases of a building's life


When a change is made anywhere in the model, all of the views update automatically
If you add an element in plan view, it displays in the related section and schedule views

Workflow

BIM has changed the process of how a building is designed


Plans, Elevations, Sections are simply 2D versions of the 3D Model
Changes made in one view automatically update in all views
Even Construction Documents update automatically with callout tags in sync with the sheet numbers

When start a command, or select an element

Parameters that are common to all of the elements in a specific family
If you modify these parameters, all elements of the same type change

Terminology


Host
Build-in-place construction elements
They can standalone in the project
Such as Floors, Walls, Roofs, Ceilings, Stair, Ramps

Components
Elements that need to ne attached to host elements
Such as Doors, Windows, Railings
As well as stand alone items - Furniture , Equipment

Views
Display and manipulate the project
Such as Fkoor Plan, Ceiling Plan, Elevation, Section, Schedule, 3D view

Datum
Elements that define the project context
Such as Level, Grid, Reference Plane

Annotation
2D elements that are placed in views
Such as Dimension, Text, Tag, Symbol

Setting Up Levels

Levels define stories and other vertical heights (like roof or parapet)
Levels can create on either elevation or section view
Elements create on levels are constrain, if level moves, element will follow

Project Browser - Elevations (Building Elevation) - North
The project has 2 existing levels: Level 1 and Level 2
Zoom-in to the level name



Click on the level name and rename it to 1st Floor
Rename the corresponding views - Click Yes
Rename Level 2 to 2nd Floor, change the level height to 5450mm

Architecture tab > Datum panel > Level
Draw panel > Pick Lines
Options bar - Offset: 3650

Move the cursor to 2nd Floor
Make sure the offset dotted line is above the level
Continue creating level until total of 10 levels

Options bar - Clear the Make Plan View option, Height: 1220
Ceate 1 additional level above the highest level
This level does not need a plan view
Click Modify to end the command



Rename the top level to Parapet, the level below to Roof
Continue to rename the other level to 3rd Floor, 4 Floor .... 8th Floor

Add another 2 level below 1st Floor



Rename them to Basement and T.O. Footing
Change the level height to -3000 and -3600

Import CAD File

Many renovation projects start with existing drawings
Instead of redrawing from scratch, import or link the CAD file

Activate 1st Floor Plan
Insert tab > Import panel > Import CAD
Navigate to the folder/ Hotel-Lobby-Floor-Plan-M.dwg

Set the following options:
Check Current view only
Color: Black and White
Layers: All
Import Units: Auto Detect
Positioning: Auto-Origin to Origin
Click Open
The imported CAD file is placed in the project on 1st Floor Plan only

Select the imported CAD file - Right-click - Override Graphic in View > By Element ...
View-Specific Element Graphics dialog box - Halftone
Click OK



The imported file displays in halftone

Activate 2nd Floor
Import CAD file Hotel-Typical-Guest-Floor-Plan-M.dwg 
Same options as 1st floor
Override the graphics and set the imported file to halftone

Create Structure Grids

Grids can be placed anytime in the design process
Grids are the basis for architectural and structural column locations
Archtectural column can be view as placeholder or decorative element
Structural column include more precise information related to industry standard

Architecture tab > Datum panel > Grid
Draw panel > Pick Lines
Select the left side 1st vertical line, change the grid number to A
Continue select all the other vertical lines one by one

Select the top horizontal line, change the letter to 1
Continue select all other horizontal lines one by one



Click Modify to end the command


Add Columns

Architectural Columns can be viewed as placeholder or decorative elements
Structural Columns include more precise information related to industry standard

Architecture tab > Build panel > Column - Structural Column
Type Selector - M_Concrete-Square-Column: 300x300mm
Options bar - Height: 2nd Floor
Multiple panel > At Grids
Cross-select all grid lines, then click Finish
Click Modify to end the command


Delete columns at A1, A2, A4, B1, B4

Structural columns remain separate even material same with walls
Delete a grid or wall does not delete the column
Columns move with nearby grids by default

Change to 3D view



Select any column, right-click - Select All Instances - Visible in View
Properties palettes:
Base Level: T.O. Footing
Top Level: Roof

Create Exterior Shell

Walls are full 3D elements in Revit that show height, thickness, materials among other things

Different wall types for different needs:


  • Exterior walls with Block and Brick
  • Corridor walls with block (higher fire rating)
  • Interior walls for partition

To show the hatching of the wall



Set the Detail Level to Medium or Fine


Add Walls by Pick Line

Activate 1st Floor
Architecture tab > Build panel > Wall
Type Selector - Exterior - Brick and CMU on Mtl Stud
Options bar - Height: Parapet, Location Line: Finish Face: Exterior
Properties palettes - Top and bottom offset: 0.0

Draw panel > Pick Lines
Hover one of the exterior walls
Make sure the dashed line display inside the wall, then click to select
Continue select all exterior walls, except the curved curtain walls
If there is a door, don't add 2 walls
Click Modify to end the command
Press spacebar to flip the wall when necessary



Select the wall, use Drag Wall End control to lengthen the wall


Add Curtain Walls

Architecture tab > Build [anel > Wall
Type Selector - Curtain Wall: Exterior Glazing
Options bar - Height: Roof
Properties palettes - Top Offset: -1850

Draw panel > Pick Lines
Tab-select all the curved lines
Click Modify to end the command
Change to 3D view
View Control bar - Visual Style: Consistent Color


Add Parapet

Activate Floor Plan: Roof
Select the small curved wall at the north-east corner


Right-click - Disallow Join
Repeat the same steps on the other join with curtain wall

Architecture tab > Build panel > Wall
Type Selector - Exterior - Brick on Mtl Stud - Parapet


Warning appear
Revit remember the last settings
Click Reset constraints

Properties palette:
Location Line: Wall Centerline
Base Constraint: Roof
Base Offset: -1850
Top Constraint: Up to Level: Parapet
Top Offset: 0.0

Draw panel > Pick Lines
Pick all the curtain walls


Change to 3D view
Parapet walls add on top of the curtain walls

Adding Interior Walls

Activate 1st Floor
Zoom-in to the stair and elevator area
Architecture tab > Build panel > Wall
Type Selector - Generic 225mm Masonry
Options bar - Height: Roof, Offset: 0.0

Draw panel > Pick Line
Pick lines around elevator and stair
Use the Flip Control to flip the wall when necessary
Use the Drag Wall End control to close the opening


Aligne Wall with Grid Line

Modify tab > Modify panel > Align
Options bar - Prefer: Centerline
Select vertical grid line C, then select centerline of the elevator wall


Click the padlock to lock the wall with the grid line
Repeat the same steps on the other 2 walls
Click Modify to end the command

Repeat the process on the other stairwell



Disallow the join between interior and exterior wall
Align and lock them, enable the join again


Add Front Desk and Office Walls

Select imported CAD file, right-click - Hide in View - Elements
Architecture tab > Build panel > Wall
Type Selector - Interior - 138mm Partition (1hr)
Options bar - Height: 2nd Floor, Location Line: Wall Centerline
Properties palettes - Top Offset: -300



Place the walls as shown

Modify panel > Split Element


Click the intersection of the horizontal and vertical interior walls
Click Modify to end the command

Select the left wall
Properties palette - Top Constraint: Unconnected, Unconnected Height: 1220
This becomes the base of the Front Desk shelf


Drag Wall End of the left wall

Add the Support Room Walls


Add interior walls as shown
Fillet the 2 walls at 3000
Align the lower interior wall with the right side wall by face


Add a curved wall height 2500 to separate the labby from the breakfast area

Add Typical Guest Floor Walls

Activate 2nd Floor
Properties palettes - Underlay: None
Add Interior - 138mm Partition (1 hr)
Options bar - Height: 3rd Floor, Location Line: Finish Face: Interior
Properties palettes - Top Offset: -300


Add interior walls as shown

Adding Doors and Windows

Doors and windows are hosted by walls
Use alignment lines and temporary dimensions to place the opening
Tags are included automatically as you add the door or window
Enter SM to place opening directly at the midpoint of wall

Add Door

Activate 1st Floor
Select any grid line, enter VH to hide by category
Architecture tab > Build panel > Door
Type Selector - Single Flush: 0915 x 2134mm
Make sure Tag on Placement is on


Place the door at the left exterior wall, change the tag to 101
Press spacebar to flip the door


Place the doors as shown
Tag number automatically increase based on the 1st door added

Cross-select all elements
Filter panel > Filter


Select Door only
Type Selector - Single Flush: 0915 x 2032mm

Zoom-in to the top-right corner
Mode panel > Load Family
Library folder/ US Metric folder/ Door folder/ M_Double-Glass 1
Type Selector - M-Double-Glass 1: 1830 x 2134mm


Place the door at the end of the hall
Quick Access toolbar > Aligned Dimension


Select inner of left wall, center of door, inner of right wall
Click the EQ control to centered between 2 doors and lock them

Delete the dimension


Click OK to maintain the EQ constraint

Load a Door Type

Architecture tab > Build panel > Door
Mode panel > Load Family
US Metric floder/ Doors folder/ M_Double-Flush-Dbl Acting.rfa
Type Selector - 1830 x 1981



Add Doors on 2nd Floor

Activate 2nd Floor
Turn off the grid lines
Architecture tab > Build panel > Door
Type Selector - M_Single Flush: 0915 x 2032mm


Place the 1st door and change the door tag to 201
Continue add the same door by imported CAD file

Create New Door Type

Type Selector - M_Single Flush: 0762 x 2032mm
Edit Type - Duplicate - 0620 x 2032mm
Change the width to 620
Add the new doors by inported CAD file

Load door family - M_Bifold-4 Panel: 1830 x 2032mm


Add the Bifold Doors as shown

Load door family - M_Double - Glass 1: 1830 x 2134mm


Add the double glass door at the balcony

Add and Copy Window

View control bar - Reveal Hidden Elements
Select the grid, Reveal Hidden Elements panel > Toggle Reveal Hidden Elements Mode

Architectyre tab > Build panel > Window
Mode panel > Load Family
US Metric folder/ Window folder/ M_Casement 3x3 with Trim
Type Selector - M_Casement 3x3 with Trim: 0915 x 1220mm


Add 4 windows as shown, exact location is not important


Use the temporary dimension to adjust the window closest to the stair grid line at 790


Use Aligned dimension, make it equal and lock the padlock

Use temporary dimension to adjust the center of the 1st window to the grid at 1400
Delete the Aligned dimension but keep the constraint

Change to 3D view
Ctrl-select all windows
Clipboard panel > Copy to Clipboard
Clipboard panel > Paste - Aligned to Selected Levels


Shift-select 3rd to 8th Floor

Add Windows on 1st Floor

Activate 1st Floor
Architecture tab > Build panel > Window
Type Selector - Casement 3x3 with Trim: 0915 x 1220mm
Edit Type - Duplicate


Name: 1220 x 1220mm


Width: 1220

Add the 1st window


Click on the temporary dimension, change it to 1140


Click on the H icon to make it permanent


Select the dimension, drag the witness line to the center of window and lock it


Add the 2nd windowdrag the witness line to the center of left and right window 
Change the dimension to 1750


Repeat the same steps on the other 2 windows


Place 2 more windows on the back wall
